The Ultimate Super Smash Bros Character Guide Sonic

Ultimate is huge. Not just in terms of hype and importance and sales potential, but just in terms of sheer stuff. The Nintendo Switch mascot fighter features over a hundred stages, nearly a thousand songs, and too many Pokemon and items and Assist Trophies to think of crammed onto a cartridge you can plan on the go or on a TV. When you have as many big franchises as Nintendo, putting them all in one game will make that game is very big boy indeed. But the biggest, most exciting thing about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is its mind-blowing, heartwarming roster of playable characters. Fighting games pride themselves not just on the strength of their mechanics but the strength of its fighters, especially in a crossover fighters like this. And Super Smash Bros. Ultimate crushes all rivals by including every single playable character from the across the four previous games in the twenty-year-old series. Include the new combatants and so far we have over 70 fighters to wrap our heads around. We’re excited, but we’re also intimidated. So to get ready for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, every day, character by character, we’re creating the ultimate guide to all of its characters. Today’s fighter: Sonic. Stay on targetcenter_img Who Are They?Hold onto your chili dogs because it’s Sonic the Hedgehog, the speedy blue little critter who made Sega a powerful console maker in the 1990s and a modest third-party publisher today. 90 percent of Sonic games are absolute garbage, yet people still have a ton of love and nostalgia for this scamp. So he must be doing something right. Just hold onto this particular image of Sonic before Hollywood somehow finds a new way to ruin him.Smash HistoryIt’s absolutely hilarious to me that Solid Snake got to earn the title of first third-party Smash character before Sonic. When Sonic did eventually appear in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it wasn’t so much about playing out the legendary mascot rival battle between Sonic and Mario. It was more just being glad Sonic ran in on Snake’s coattails. Still, Sonic in Brawl and every Smash Bros. game since is a huge deal. It’s always special when an EGM April Fools’ Day rumor becomes a real thing. What Looks New in Ultimate? After being only decent in Brawl, it’s actually disgusting how great Sonic became in Smash Wii U/3DS. At Ultimate’s E3 tournament the final match came down to Mario vs. Sonic because those were just smart characters to pick. But Ultimate isn’t Smash Wii U/3DS and Sonic isn’t quite what he used to be. Most notably, while Sonic still has his incomparable dash speed, his spin dash attacks themselves can’t be cancelled or power through shields as easily. Our Hopes?Ultimate features music from Sonic Mania, by far the best Sonic the Hedgehog game in decades. With that nod to classic Sonic games, would it be too much to ask for a classic Sonic character model? Or at the very least get the movie version in there. When it comes to terror, those legs are top tier.Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now. Read our review of this majestic video game pageant.
