UCT in global deal to develop medicines

first_img4 March 2013The University of Cape Town’s Drug Discovery and Development Centre (H3-D) is to collaborate with global pharmaceutical firm Novartis to narrow the gap between science and clinical research in order to develop medicines to treat patients in Africa. The collaboration between UCT and the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research was announced at the Health Equity Symposium: Science & Medicine in Africa at the NIBR headquarters in Cambridge Massachusetts last Thursday. Its aim is to develop an FDA-level clinical study site in Cape Town to carry out proof-of-concept studies of new compounds developed at H3-D.“UCT is committed to providing a meeting point for Western and African expertise to collaborate on solving problems such as Africa’s burden of disease,” the university’s vice-chancellor, Max Price, said in a statement.“This partnership with a pharmaceutical giant of Novartis’ calibre has the potential to benefit the entire continent.”Novartis will provide H3-D with new chemical starting points for the design of medicines against tuberculosis, as well as conduct joint programmes on malaria research with the Singapore-based Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases.UCT’s H3-D is the first drug discovery centre in Africa with an initial focus on TB and malaria. In 2012, H3-D got approval from the Medicines for Malaria Venture for the compound it developed as a pre-clinical anti-malarial candidate. The collaboration will also include scientific exchange programmes between H3-D and Novartis scientists to address medical needs and encourage knowledge sharing in disciplines such as pharmacology, computational and medicinal chemistry and clinical sciences. It will also comprise financial support from the Novartis Research Foundation to fund training programmes, fellowship grants and laboratory upgrades at H3-D.“This partnership with Novartis will augment support already provided by the South African government’s Department of Science and Technology and Technology Innovation Agency to build drug discovery and development capabilities on the African continent,” said H3-D director Kelly Chibale.“It will help us address medical needs in South Africa and the continent and build strong translational research capabilities that will create commercial opportunities for the country.“Not only will Novartis help with our efforts to build a translational research infrastructure but it will help train a new generation of drug discovery scientists who are familiar with the continent and can most benefit from this expertise,” he said.Three H3-D scientists have already received drug discovery technology training from Novartis at its headquarters in Basel, Switzerland and several Novartis scientists are scheduled to take their sabbaticals at H3-D.SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

Anonymous Hacks Security Company HBGary, Dumps 50,000 Emails Online

first_imgaudrey watters A security company that’s been working with the government to track down the cyber-activists involved with Anonymous has now become the target of that very group. HBGary‘s website has been defaced and its CEO Aaron Barr has had his social media accounts hijacked and his personal information leaked online – all in retribution for his claims that he had infiltrated Anonymous, the loosely-affiliated collective of hacktivists. The actions by Anonymous follow a recent story in The Financial Times in which Barr claimed that he had “penetrated Anonymous as part of a project to demonstrate the security risks to organisations from social media and networking.” In the article, Barr identified people he said were key members of the Anonymous “hierarchy,” including a co-founder in the U.S. and leaders in Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and Australia. Barr claimed he had discovered these individuals’ identities via Facebook and Internet Relay Chat (IRC).Anonymous dispute Barr’s findings, claiming the group has no such hierarchy or leadership. Anonymous also contends that Barr was poised to sell some of this data to the FBI. Law enforcement in the U.S. and Europe have been tracking Anonymous, with several arrests made late last month. In a very tongue-in-cheek press release on the AnonNews site, Anonymous writes that “Mr Barr has successfully broken through our over 9000 proxy field and into our entirely non-public and secret insurgent IRC lair, where he then smashed through our fire labyrinth with vigor, collected all the gold rings on the way, opened a 50 silver key chest to find Anon’s legendary hackers on steroids password.”Less tongue-in-cheek, the hacking of Barr’s social media accounts and the hijacking of HBGary’s website. Tweets from Barr’s hacked account include links to torrents of over 50,000 HBGary emails. The tweets also claim that hackers have full administrative access to the company’s website, all its financials, and its software products. HBGary founder Greg Hoglund has told Krebs on Security that Anonymous “didn’t just pick on any company, but we try to protect the US government from hackers. They couldn’t have chosen a worse company to pick on.” For its part, Anonymous contends that HBGary couldn’t have picked a worse group to pick on. My 10 Favorite Features: Adobe Premiere Pro Next

first_imgAdobe has updated their popular professional video editing application, Premiere Pro. Here’s the 10 new features we’re most excited about!Adobe is revealing the next version of Premiere Pro at NAB 2013. If you are attending NAB, be sure to check out Adobe at booth #SL3910. Adobe is currently offering a 40% NAB promo on the Creative Cloud. In this post, I a look at my 10 favorite features in Premiere Pro Next. A mix of small & big additions, there is something for everyone here (previous users, as well as FCP & Media Composer editors).Move a clip up or downYes! Thank you Adobe. For ex Final Cut Pro editors, this feature will be very welcome. This is a huge time saver and my favorite new feature.Adobe calls this new feature Nudge.  You can Nudge clips up, down, and left and right. By default Nudge Up & Down don’t have shortcuts but you can add these.  You can also nudge in the Titler – very cool.Insert as Nest or Individual ClipsSome new insert and overwrite features made it into the update.  The new feature appears as an icon in the top left of the Timeline (highlighted in Red in the screenshot below). This feature determines the behavior when you edit a sequence into a sequence. I often prefer to edit a sequence into another sequence as clips, and this feature lets you do just that. When it is toggled on, the sequence is added as a Nest. When it is toggled off, the sequence is added as individual clips. I loved this feature in FCP & Media Composer and it is a welcome addition to Premiere Pro.Control Surface SupportControl surface support was previously in Audition CS6 and is a welcome addition to Premiere Pro.Using a control surface is my preferred and a more tactile way to work with audio, be it a hardware or an iPad. This is particularly handy for audio keyframe automation.Timeline Display SettingsClicking the wrench icon in the Timeline brings up the Display Settings. This feature makes it quick and easy to customize your display settings.Quicker access to Track OptionsVideo and audio clips in the Timeline now display an FX icon.Click on the FX to reveal fixed effect options for Video (Motion, Opacity, Time Remapping) & Audio (Volume, Channel Volume, Panner).  This allows quick changes to these parameters from the timeline – can end up being a big timesaver.Link & LocateLink & Locate offers Improved Media Management.  Right click on a offline clip and choose “Link Media”.  This brings up the floating”Link Media” window.  Check “Media Browser to Locate Files” which brings up the Media Browser, then click Locate to reconnect the media.Paste AttributesPaste Attributes in Premiere Pro is another feature that I will use constantly. Now when you Paste Attributes you can choose which video and audio effects to paste. In CS6 when you pasted effects it pasted all of them.Audio Clip MixerIn Premiere Pro CS6, the Audio Mixer worked with track audio. If you changed the volume with a track fader, you were changing the track volume, but you didn’t see the change in the Timeline (as the default was clip audio.) Premiere Pro Next adds the Audio Clip Mixer that is now part of the default workspace. Switching to the Audio Workspace brings up both the audio clip and audio track mixer.Lumetri LooksLumetri Looks adds handy presets for common looks like Bleach Bypass & Day for Night (great for adding a unique color grading style to your Premiere Pro project). These looks were created with Speedgrade. You can open Speedgrade and modify the presets to create your own custom looks. These looks will be a timesaver for editors looking to quickly create stylized looks (Sixties) or fix common problems (Warm Overall).Specify an AutoSave LocationPreviously in Premiere Pro, an Autosave folder was created where your project was saved. You can now specify a location for your Autosaves. This may seem like a small feature but this is definitely handy time saver.Adobe Anywhere  (Bonus)Prelude & Premiere Pro both offer integration with Adobe Anywhere.  Adobe Anywhere (separate purchase) lets editors in different locations collaborate. This could be huge for freelancers and large companies alike.  Like many video editors I am looking forward to seeing this at NAB.  Check out Abobe’s Reveal page to see details about all the new stuff!last_img read more

first_imgMan Utd manager Mourinho escapes FA appeal on swearing chargeby Ansser Sadiq10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveThe FA have confirmed they will not appeal the ruling on Jose Mourinho’s swearing charge. The Independent Regulatory Commission found Mourinho was not guilty of an FA charge for alleged abusive language towards television cameras after Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Newcastle United. It was believed the FA would appeal decision after they were left unhappy with the commission’s finding. However, a statement has been released clarifying that the governing body will not proceed with their appeal.”The FA welcomes the original decision of the Appeal Board to uphold its appeal against Mr Mourinho for using abusive, insulting and improper language after the Manchester United v Newcastle United match on 6 October 2018,” an FA statement said.”It also respects the decision of the Independent Regulatory Commission to dismiss the charge based on the legal argument submitted by Mr Mourinho.”The FA’s position, which it maintained throughout the hearing, was that Mr Mourinho directed his abusive, insulting and improper words directly towards the camera lens, and in these circumstances, the decision to charge was consistent with previous FA charging practice.”Whilst we accept that the Independent Regulatory Commission disagreed on this occasion, The FA wishes to make clear that it will continue to take action against Participants for any form of abusive, insulting, or improper language or behaviour, which is directed towards a camera.”Finally, following the Appeal Board decision, and the most recent decision of the Independent Regulatory Commission, The FA now considers this matter to be closed.” About the authorAnsser SadiqShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more
